Ingredients
  

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 lb Ground beef (80/20) Great for juicy patties.
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Pepper
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
  • 1 Large Egg Optional, helps hold patties together.
  • 2 Tbsp Breadcrumbs Optional, just a couple spoonfuls.

For the Gravy

  • 2 Medium Onions, sliced For softening and flavor.
  • 2 Tbsp Butter or oil For cooking onions and patties.
  • 2 Cups Beef broth
  • 2 Tbsp Flour For thickening the gravy.
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Splash Milk or cream Optional, for a creamier gravy.

Preparation

  • In a bowl, combine ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. If desired, add the egg and breadcrumbs. Mix gently and do not overmix.
  • Shape the mixture into 4 to 5 patties, about three-quarter inch thick, pressing a small dent in the center of each.

Cooking Patties

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with a little oil. Add the patties and sear for 3 to 4 minutes per side until browned.
  • Remove patties from the skillet and set aside.

Making Gravy

  • In the same skillet, add butter if needed and lower the heat to medium. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook until onions are softened and golden, about 8 to 12 minutes.
  • Sprinkle flour over onions, stirring for about a minute. Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring. Add Worcestershire sauce and let simmer until thickened. For creaminess, add a splash of milk or cream.

Simmering

  • Return patties to the skillet along with any juices. Spoon gravy over them, cover loosely, and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes until cooked through and flavors meld.

Note

For an extra flavor boost, scrape up the browned bits from the skillet while making gravy and add them in. You can freeze leftovers for up to 2 months.
