For the Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 pounds Potatoes Russet or Yukon Gold work best.
  • 4 tablespoons Butter For creamy consistency.
  • 1/2 cup Milk Warm before adding for best results.
  • to taste Salt Salt the potato water for flavor.
  • to taste Black pepper Season to preference.

Preparation

  • Boil the potatoes. Chop them into chunks, cover with water, add a good pinch of salt, and boil until a fork slides in easily.
  • While the potatoes cook, heat a large skillet on medium-high. Add the ground beef and break it up, letting it sit to brown.
  • Stir in chopped onion and cook until softened.
  • Add garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, then season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce if using.
  • Sprinkle flour over the beef and stir for about a minute, then slowly pour in beef broth while stirring until gravy thickens.
  • Drain the potatoes, add butter and warm milk, then mash to desired consistency, seasoning with salt as needed.
  • Spoon mashed potatoes onto plates and ladle beefy gravy on top.
