  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch plus 2 tablespoons water (slurry), or 2 tablespoons flour Used for thickening the gravy.

Preparation

  • Pat the beef dry with paper towels and season with salt and pepper.
  • Heat oil or butter in a large skillet or pot over medium-high heat. Add the beef in a single layer, browning for a few minutes on each side.
  • Lower the heat to medium and add the chopped onion. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until it starts to soften, then add minced garlic and stir for about 30 seconds.
  • Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring to scrape up browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
  • Add onion powder and garlic powder; taste and adjust salt and pepper. Cover and simmer until tender, about 25-35 minutes for sirloin or 60-90 minutes for chuck.
  • To thicken the gravy, mix cornstarch with water in a small bowl and stir it into the simmering sauce. Let it bubble for 1 to 2 minutes until glossy.
  • Serve the beef and gravy over hot cooked rice, adding extra broth if desired.
